On Feb. 18, MIH participated in the annual Developmental Disabilities (DD) Day at the Legislature — a day when Marylanders gather in Annapolis to advocate to strengthen supports and services for people with developmental disabilities.
The day began with a jam-packed program at the Graduate Annapolis, where more than 800 advocates came together to hear from legislators and organizational leaders. The event is annually hosted by the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Coalition.
MIH then joined partners at Compass, Inc. to meet with legislators, including Speaker of the House Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Delegate Emily Shetty, Senators Cory McCray and Craig Zucker.
During these meetings, MIH advocated for grant funding to support its work, a $1.25 million investment in the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) Rental Subsidy Program (RSP), and recommended improvements to the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program to expand access to inclusive, affordable housing across Maryland.
MIH will testify for the RSP at the DDA Budget Hearings on Feb. 26 and 27.
“Being able to hold meaningful conversations with Maryland’s legislative leaders — and to have them truly listen to our concerns — is something I deeply appreciate as both an executive director and a Marylander,” said MIH Executive Director Tim Wiens. “It gives me great faith to know that we have such committed and passionate leaders representing us as state citizens.”
