Elected officials, candidates, housing leaders and disability advocates gathered on Wednesday, May 27 in Sparks for the Baltimore County Inclusive Housing Forum, a collaborative event hosted by Maryland Inclusive Housing (MIH) and Richcroft, Inc.

Held at Richcroft’s headquarters, the forum focused on one of Baltimore County’s growing challenges: ensuring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have access to affordable, accessible and inclusive housing opportunities within their communities.

The event brought together county executive and council candidates, service providers, nonprofit leaders and members of the disability community for a morning of networking, discussion and advocacy centered on the future of inclusive housing in Baltimore County.

County Executive candidates Izzy Patoka, Nick Stewart and Pat Young each addressed attendees, sharing their perspectives on housing, community development and disability inclusion. Several County Council candidates also participated in the event.

Representatives from MIH, Richcroft and the Baltimore County Office of Housing discussed the increasing demand for housing that allows people with disabilities to live independently while remaining connected to their communities, support networks and essential services.

“It was very encouraging to see local leaders and advocates come together today to help the audience better understand the affordable housing challenges facing people with disabilities in Baltimore County,” said MIH Director of Housing Ahmna Khan.

One of the morning’s most impactful moments came from self-advocate Niesha McCoy, a lifelong Randallstown resident living with developmental and physical disabilities. McCoy spoke about the importance of ensuring people with disabilities are not only included in conversations about housing and community planning, but truly seen, valued and heard.

The forum also provided attendees with an opportunity to connect directly with candidates and community leaders while learning more about the services and resources available through the participating organizations.

“I thought the turnout was wonderful,” said Richcroft Chief Executive Officer Kevin Drumheller. “People were engaged and eager to learn more about the housing crisis in Baltimore County. We were deeply appreciative of the three County Executive candidates to come and share their visions.”

Maryland Inclusive Housing works to help Marylanders with intellectual and developmental disabilities access and maintain affordable, accessible housing of their choice by creating opportunities, identifying resources and providing individualized support services.

Richcroft, Inc. provides residential and personal supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping individuals live meaningful lives within their communities.
