MIH to Launch Charles County Housing Committee

In June, Maryland Inclusive Housing (MIH) will officially launch the Charles County Housing Committee — the seventh regional housing committee hosted by the organization. The committee will bring together local leaders, housing advocates, and service providers to advance inclusive and affordable housing opportunities tailored to the needs of Charles County residents.

The committee was inspired by the development of the LaPlata Villages Apartment Complex, a new multi-unit housing community that will reserve 10 percent of its apartments for local residents with developmental disabilities. Located within walking distance of restaurants, grocery stores, and other shopping opportunities, the development reflects the type of accessible, community-integrated housing MIH hopes to encourage throughout the county.

The project is being led by Drew Havrilla of J.C. Drew Homes, a custom homebuilding company specializing in designing and constructing high-quality residential homes.

Charter members of the committee include Tom McQuillan, Vice President of Community Supports and Services at Providence of Maryland; Donna Retzlaff, Executive Director of Spring Dell Center; and Tom Minnick, who helped connect Havrilla to MIH.

“The LaPlata Villages project was the inspiration for forming this committee,” said Ahmna Khan, MIH Director of Housing. “We hope this committee will help us identify future housing opportunities and build strong community support for inclusive housing development across Charles County.”

Through its growing network of regional committees, MIH continues working alongside local partners to increase access to safe, affordable, and inclusive housing options for people with disabilities across Maryland.
